Moving home · practical checklist · reviewed 15 July 2026
Move home swiftly—without losing the handoffs that matter.
The fastest safe move is the one where each unresolved item has one owner, one next date and one piece of evidence.
By Matheus Dadalto, PlacePact founder and renter.
Before you commit: prove the home works
- Re-run the whole budget with rent, deposit, bills, travel and moving cost.
- View the property and record unresolved damage, access, storage, meters and included items.
- Read the tenancy and identify named tenants, bill responsibility, dates, notice and deposit steps.
- Keep holding money, quote terms and promised work in writing.
As soon as it is agreed: assign the handoffs
- Agree the actual move-in and move-out dates before booking transport.
- Name the owner for energy, water, council tax, broadband and any TV licence.
- List large and fragile items, floors, lifts, parking and carry distance before requesting quotes.
- Check old-provider notice periods and broadband lead time.
Seven days to go: remove move-day surprises
- Confirm keys, parking or loading permission and the arrival window.
- Pack a first-night box: medicines, chargers, bedding, toiletries and cleaning basics.
- Photograph valuables and items a mover will handle.
- Prepare address changes, prioritising DVLA records, insurance, employer, bank and electoral registration.
Keys and the next 48 hours: close both homes
- Check the inventory; photograph empty rooms, damage, meters, keys and smoke alarms.
- Send opening and final meter readings.
- Test heating, water, locks and appliances; find the stopcock and consumer unit.
- Return old keys, request the deposit and keep final bills visible until settled.
